Eliminate "Rate later" block

I like to think of my ratings during the end credits. It's kind of annoying that the site will not let me punch in my rating unless the item is marked as watched.

Exclude ratings of unwatched items from statistical calculations, by all means, but please let us set them anyway.

Thanks for the suggestion, and I get the use case. For now this isn't something I’m going to allow: rating an item that isn't watched or dropped doesn't really hold up logically. You can't rate something you haven't watched (or at least dropped partway through), so the rating needs a watched or dropped state behind it.

That said, there's a fair point in there. If you're scrobbling and you've reached the credits, the item should already be flagged as watched around the 90% mark, so the rating would be available to you right then. That part is probably worth improving on my side.

And in any case, if you're at the credits you can just mark it as watched manually and rate it straight away. That's no problem at all. Either way, I'll keep it in mind. If enough people ask for it, or there's some reason for it I'm not seeing right now, I'll reconsider it.

Thanks for taking the time to write it up ;)

The annoyance is that if I am not scrobbling—which I never am; all of my tracking is manual—I have to either accept a timestamp that's slightly wrong (up to several minutes for a movie with long credits) or calculate when playback will finish and manually set the timestamp when marking as watched.

Doable? Yes. But it's unnecessary friction brought on by the site forcing me to act in a specific sequence. I see your point regarding the apparent (il)logic of rating something that isn't marked as watched, but I don't think tracking sites should rigidly enforce an order of operations on users.

I'm sure rating calculations could drop values from users who didn't watch that item, though maybe it'd be more expensive than I think with WT's database? I don't know what stack you're using.

(That “math it” workaround will also break if someday WeTrakr decides to prohibit “future” plays.)

Was going to edit this into the idea itself, but I can't; I just get “Error updating post”:

btw, Trakt used to allow this. Blocking it was one of many changes they made in the awful redesign pushed out this summer
